Nuclear Electron Beam Welding

Nuclear fabrication demands welds of proven integrity in thick, safety-critical components, where quality, traceability and repeatability are essential. Electron Beam Welding (EBW) joins full-thickness sections in a single pass with deep penetration, narrow welds and exceptionally low distortion.

Performed in a high vacuum, EBW removes the need for pre-heating and interstage non-destructive examination, avoiding the risk of hydrogen embrittlement while cutting fabrication time and cost. Using CVE’s Ebflow local-vacuum technology, large vessels can be welded rapidly and reliably for conventional, small modular (SMR) and micro modular (MMR) reactor programmes.

Electron Beam Welding of Stator Blades

Fabricated using electron beam welding to join the many blade sections together results in a precise, repeatable weld. Titanium is perfectly suited to the electron beam welding process as it is done in a vacuum to avoid oxidation.

Electron Beam Welding of Front Bearing Housing

This extremely complex assembly is fabricated from several relatively simple components. There are not many other welding processes that you could successfully employ for this type of product. The part requires linear, circumferential, and planetary welds during successive operations.

Electron Beam Welding of Compressor Rotors

This major rotating component demands welds of high integrity, in 901 nickel. Fabrication by electron beam welding achieves savings in weight, material, and machining costs.

Typical nuclear applications

From pressure vessels and containment structures through to reactor internals and pressure-retaining components, EBW and Ebflow support thick-section nuclear fabrication with speed, quality and full traceability.
